As the correct product choice is critical for optimal performance, great care should be taken during selection. Bay Abrasives's specialist staff are available at all times, & will gladly assist you with fine-tuning your requirements. The following information will help us make an informed specification for the correct wheel for your application. As determined by International Standards, Superabrasive grinding wheels are described as in the following example :
WHEEL TYPES(SHAPES):
The wheel types are actually the shape of the wheel. In addition to the standard shapes & common sizes, wheels can be manufactured to your specific requirements, within equipment limitations.
DIAMOND or CBN ? (D or B prefix to grit size)
This choice is critical because CBN will NOT grind Tungsten carbide and a diamond wheel will not grind steel efficiantly.
DIAMOND:
Non-ferrous metals such as Tungsten Carbide, as well as ceramics & glass.
CBN:
Ferrous (containing iron) metals : hardened carbon & alloy steels, high speed steels, cast iron, tool & die steels, superalloys & hard stainless steels.
GRIT SIZES:
The choice of grit size is determined by the finish & amount of stock removal required, & affects the hardness & wear-resistance of a grinding wheel. It is basically divided into rough, medium, fine & polished grinding finishes. “Roughest acceptable finish” should be the deciding factor when choosing grit size, as finer grits have lower stock removal rates & higher wear rates.

Concentration:
The concentration of a diamond or CBN grinding wheel is determined by the grinding operation to be carried out.The choices available are :
SYMBOL | DESCRIPTION | RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS |
C125 | HIGH CONCENTRATION | Profile grinding,Flute grinding and Slitting. Small area of contact up to 4mm.Wet grinding. |
C100 | HIGH CONCENTRATION | Profile grinding,Flute grinding and slitting. Small area of contact up to 6mm. Wet grinding. |
C75 | MEDIUM CONCENTRATION | Surface, cylindrical or tool grinding, saw & knife sharpening.Wet and dry. |
C25-50 | LOW CONCENTRATION | Fine grinding and large area of contact. Preferably wet. |
Bond:
Bay Abrasives offer various bonds to suit the wide variety of grinding applications. These range from friable, free-cutting bonds (suitable for dry grinding & polishing) to harder bonds (wet grinding & small areas of contact).
